This highly reliable equipment, due to successive improvements, is currently an important instrument for the detection and the follow-up of glaucoma. It is completely objective, fast-paced and used in patients with ocular hypertension, suspected to have glaucoma or with the disease already reported and in cases with a family history of glaucoma.
Scanning Laser Polarimetry (SLP) uses the birefringent properties of the nerve fiber layer, which modifies the polarization of light when illuminated. This change is proportional to the thickness of the birefringent tissue, thus allowing a quantitative and objective measurement of the thickness of the nerve fiber layer of the retina in the region surrounding the optical disc.
